Ventimiglia - The Flowery Gateway to Italy

Its origins

Balzi Rossi and Prehistoric Museum: The archaeological site of Balzi Rossi is one of the most important from the Paleolithic era in Europe: it includes a series of caves frequented by prehistoric man and his remains, exhibited in the Museum.

Roman and Pre-Roman Era: Anciently called Albium Intemelium (now Ventimiglia), it was, together with Albium Ingaunum (now Albenga), one of the most important settlements of the ancient Ligurians. Romanization occurred around 180 BC, and today we can admire the theatre and the artefacts in the adjoining museum.

Medieval Ventimiglia: In the Middle Ages, following the fall of the Roman Empire, the inhabitants took refuge on the hill to the right of the Roia, and there a new fortified city arose, which from the ancient name Albintimilium, ended up being called Ventimiglia.
